Getting an HIV TestProviding Confidential and Anonymous HIV and STD Counseling and Testing in San FranciscoThe AIDS Health Project provides free HIV counseling and testing to gay and bisexual men, men who have sex with men, and transgendered men who are residents of San Francisco. AHP has been a leader in HIV counseling and testing since 1985, when it opened the first counseling and testing site in the world. AHP now delivers more than 4,500 HIV antibody tests per year. In recent years, with advances in technology, HIV testing has become fast and easy. Testing, and the counseling that accompanies it, remains the best way to learn about your risk of HIV in a safe, nonjudgmental, and confidential way. A diverse team of trained counselors offers: • Anonymous and confidential services at sites throughout the city • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing in addition to HIV testing • Multilingual counseling and testing • Either rapid testing (results within an hour) or standard testing (results in one week) All testing includes personalized counseling to help individuals understand HIV and AIDS, the meaning of test results, how specific behaviors transmit HIV and other STDs, and how to reduce the risk of getting HIV. AHP’s Linkage Services ensure that people who test HIV-positive receive referrals to HIV and STD prevention services, medical care, substance use treatment services, HIV status disclosure assistance, and other support services.
