Trainings for HIV Counselors and Mental Health ProvidersQuality client care begins with professionals who are well trainedThe AHP Training Program is integral to AHP’s goal of transforming research and experience into continuing education for HIV service providers. AHP created its first trainings in 1985 and 1986 after developing the first HIV counseling and testing protocol in the world. Since that time, AHP has become the largest provider of counseling and testing training in California and is a leader in HIV-related trainings for social service providers working on the front lines of the epidemic. AHP trainings are guided by adult education principles. They are designed to be interactive, challenging, and thought-provoking. They focus on building knowledge, insight, and practical counseling skills. And they incorporate didactic components and experiential exercises that encourage providers to examine their own values and beliefs on a range of issues such as sexuality, sexual behavior and the meaning of sex, partner relations, grief and loss, substance use, and HIV stigma. The trainings also examine the role of contextual issues such as race, poverty, and sexual orientation on behavior, and the challenges of disclosing HIV status. Currently, AHP provides:
HIV Counseling and Testing Training
Outreach Worker and Outreach Supervisor Trainings
Trainings for Providers Funded by SF Community Behavioral
Health Services
Risk Reduction Counseling Training
