How AHP Uses Your DonationSince the University of California San Francisco does not provide financial support for our services, AHP has had to learn to raise our own funds in order to serve our clients. At the same time, AHP has become one of the most efficient AIDS service organizations in the Bay Area. This means that we have reduced administrative costs, increased opportunities to wisely use well-trained volunteers and interns to complement the work of paid staff and reach more people, and developed interventions that are the most cost-effective. Here are just a few examples of how AHP takes your generosity and turns it into hope: $20 Pays for a pizza (medium size!) for volunteer counselors at one of our HIV counseling and testing sites. (AHP provides HIV antibody tests and prevention counseling to more than 5,000 people each year and trained volunteers help us to keep our costs down, allowing us to serve more people at risk for HIV.) $50 Pays for one hour of HIV prevention counseling services. (AHP provides HIV prevention information and counseling services to well more than 6,000 clients each year—either on the telephone or in person.) $100 Pays for one hour of professional crisis intervention services by a team of expert mental health professionals. (AHP provides services to nearly 400 clients a year who are a danger to themselves or to others, or who are unable to provide food, clothing, or shelter for themselves as a result of a mental disorder.) $500 Pays for a complete psychiatric evaluation and medication follow-up care by one of AHP’s psychiatrists. (AHP provides psychiatric care to more than 600 clients each year.) $1,000 Pays for a 12-week psychotherapy group led by a mental health professional. (AHP runs at least 22 support and psychotherapy groups for more than 200 clients each week, most led by trained volunteers.) $5,000 Pays for 52 weeks of a single psychotherapy group led by a mental health professional. (AHP runs at least 22 support and psychotherapy groups for more than 200 clients each week, most led by trained volunteers.) $10,000 Pays the annual stipend for one 32-hour-per-week administrative intern. (AHP administrative interns are college graduates who are interested in AHP’s mission and who want “real world” work experience prior to pursuing graduate education in medicine, psychology, social work, or another health-related field. Interns come from all over the country, receive intensive training and oversight from professional staff, and provide direct client counseling services and critical administrative support to the organization.) |
